Norwegian tradition at avant garde festival in Poland

During the last two years BIT20 has been collaborating with the Polish organization Harmonies and Noises through concerts and summer school. This May BIT20 Ensemble are attending the festival KODY in Poland, Lublin together with conductor Ingar Bergby and soloist Berit Opheim.

KODY means code and is a polish music festival that combines det traditional with the avant garde. This will be their 15th edition. BIT20 Ensemble will perform two pieces by the Norwegian composers Lasse Thoresen and Ørjan Matre.

Thoresen’s piece Chases, Cattle Calls and Charts (Løp, Lokk Og Linjer ) is a suite for traditional singer and sinfonietta, commissioned by BIT20. Since it was written in 2001-2003 BIT20 Ensemble has taken Chases, Cattle Calls and Charts on several tours abroad.

The PieceThresholdsongs (Terskelsongar) by Matre will be performed abroad for the first time on KODY. The piece was written in 2012 for BIT20 Ensemble and is based on four Norwegian folk songs about death and refers to death as the final threshold.

Berit Opheim combines Norwegian folk music’s keen ear for tonal nuances and ornamentation with classical music’s demands on precision, familiarity with musical notation and voice projection.
