WE COMPOSE! – AN IN-SCHOOL COMPOSITION PROJECT

In our popular project We Compose! students collaborate with professional composers and performers. The program offers students an awareness surrounding advanced musical expressions and activities that enhance their understanding of what music is, what music can be and how music is made. Students develop their understanding and creativity in new ways through active participation. Composing music for five days straight is an unusual and rare experience for many children.

Our goal is to strengthen the students’ ability and willingness to take chances by challenging them to cross over into educationally uncharted territory.

OUR EXPERIENCES:

  • Participating in the artistic process extends students’ understanding of what music can be.

  • Listening as a sensory practice opens doors to a different type of concentration than students typically develop in a regular school day.

  • Students with learning or social difficulties often assume new and positive roles in musical interactions with the rest of the class.

  • Collective musical experiences strengthen a class’s sense of community.

  • The feelings of accomplishment and unity that are associated with performing a concert help build a student's sense of self and identity.

  • Making music strengthens creativity as a personal quality, offering the ability and desire to take chances.
