Nattjazz: Erlend Apneseth Trio & BIT20 Ensemble

  • BIT20 Ensemble Georgernes Verft Bergen, Vestland Norway (map)

Terra Incognita

Folk music in orchestral format

Bergen-based composer Ørjan Matre and folk musician Erlend Apneseth have made excellent use of their time together. The result is a work that—drawing on archival recordings—combines Norwegian folk music, a classical tonal language, contemporary music, and improvisation. While Apneseth plays three Hardanger fiddles simultaneously, the sinfonietta BIT20 Ensemble propels the work forward with strength and power.

“My greatest musical experience so far this year”

Bergens Tidende on Terra Incognita

Meidell and Hegg-Lunde add layer upon layer of electronic processing, organic depth, and rhythmic drive. At the same time, it is a distinctly melodic work, opening up a spectrum of emotions—from euphoria and joy to longing and nostalgia.
