ALFRED HITCHCOCK’S REAR WINDOW is the point of departure for this thriller chamber opera. Living in an apartment block where they barely know their neighbours, the opera’s characters are inclined to voyeurism and social isolation.

They also act as metaphors for types of human interaction such as the apparently happy couple for whom physical abuse awaits behind closed doors or the single, elderly lady who nobody sees but who sees everything.

But can the shared anxiety caused by a murder bring these people together? In the circumstances it creates, what is real, and what is imagined? Who are the people we observe, and what can we find out by watching them? Is what we see – and interpret – always the truth?
