New, Sámi music inspired by Ole Bull
After an eventful year with Andreas Gundersen as Composer in Residence at Kode, the Sámi pianist and composer has written a commissioned piece for BIT20 Ensemble and Tora Augestad.
Gundersen is both an active composer and performer. In addition to his work as a classical pianist he is flirting with the genre pop, as a producer and songwriter. His work can be placed within the spectral and microtonal landscape.
Each year, Kode selects a new Composer in Residence as part of a project aimed at elevating the recognition of contemporary composers.
Christian Grøvlen, director of the composers’ homes, describes Gundersen’s music as «touching, intense and searching».
– Bull, Grieg, and Sæverud all built their music on Norwegian folk music in their own ways. An essential part of Andreas's artistic expression is rooted in the Sámi culture to which he belongs, thereby carrying forward this tradition into our contemporary era, says Christian Grøvlen.
Get to know Gundersen in this portrait from his home Torhop outside Tana, where he works and live.
Working with the commissioned piece Gundersen har explored material from Ole Bull’s collection of letters, as well as Norwegian poets from Bull’s time. This has inspired a piece that explores the chamber format and classic lied tradition.
